Veteran's Day 2006

Today is Veteran's Day in the U.S.

I want to thank all veterans and currently serving military personnel for their service to us and our country. Thank you also to all of the long-suffering families of those service men and women. God bless all of you!

I skipped forward a bit in my slide scanning to our one and only trip to Hawaii, in November of 1987. We were there 19 years ago this week, and visited Punchbowl Crater, above Honolulu.

Punchbowl Crater is the location of the National Cemetery of the Pacific, for servicemen and women and also other government types.

We went there on Veterans Day, and although we missed the official festivities, we took a walk around the interior of this extinct volcano, went through the building that has a chapel and information about American wars up until that time.

It was almost as awesome as going to the Arizona Memorial in Pearl Harbor.

Again, these were taken on Veteran's Day 1987 at the National Cemetery of the Pacific, inside Punchbowl Crater, and extinct volcano above the city of Honolulu, Hawaii.

Give 'em a click.

This first one is just a scene of some grave sites. You can see how many had fresh flowers were put on their graves for the occasion.

This is a wall statue on the front center of the building at the memorial. This is the building containing a chapel and explanations of our wars over time. I included this photo for any old timers who used to watch the TV program, Hawaii Five-O. This statue was shown during the opening introduction every week for that show.

This is looking back into the crater, and over the cemetery, after turning around from taking the photo above this one. It's a beautiful and solemn place. You can also see Diamond head Crater in the distance, probably the most recognizable crater in the world.

This final one is a scene of lines of trees and American flags that lined the roads inside the crater. This has always been my favorite photo from the cemetery.

Today is also Remembrance Day in Canada (or Canadia as Number One Daughter says).
