My office was right next to Mr Griffin. We rode skateboards in the department because it was so big. Mr Griffin had a love for animals and he was always bringing in strays for us to keep and take care of. Once a cat got hit by a car on South Grand and he took it to the vet and itās leg had to be amputated. He brought it to us....we named it Tripod. He lived his life out in that parts department. He had raccoons in the warehouse...Squirrels...you name it. Birdie, his wife, was the head of the Toy department and the Trim A Tree section. She sent me to āTrim A Treeā school in Tyler Tx so I could help out during the season as the Parts department was slower. Thatās when bows first became part of Christmas tree adornment. She was a powerful strong woman and when she spoke people listened. I remember going into the shop one day and she walked over....she said this place is a mess and picked up a broom and started to sweep. Within ten minutes 5 people had picked up brooms and were sweeping. LOL. She then mozied back across the street to the main building where her office sat high up where she could look out over the showroom floor. Birdie was something! Loved our years there...lots of good friends and memories made! My dad worked at Mulhearn Funeral Home and I visited the store everyday it was open as a toy store admiring the trains which I loved.

I was 6 years old when my mother signed me up for a giveaway that Howard Griffins was having where you could run through the store for 5-10 minutes and grab all the toys you could carry to the checkout counter. My brothers and sisters and I went the night before and planned my run by scoping out all the toys we wanted for Christmas and placing some where I could reach during my run.

Man Christmas was good that year as we all had more toys than our parents could ever afford. I was given a bike because my time ran out. I will try and share the photos I have of that magically experience. Now I have the jingle dancing in my head.
